Moon Knight

Moon Knight

Moon Knight is the latest Marvel show on Disney Plus that follows Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) working at a gift shop but then becomes more serious when he goes to sleep and finds himself in random locations. Desperate to get his life back, he must go on a journey of self discovery and learn what it means to be himself. Episode 1 starts off with the main villain Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) his goal is to resurrect the alligator god and he doesn’t care who he has to kill to get his way. After scoring a date with a woman, Steven feeds his goldfish and goes to sleep. The next day he ends up in the field not knowing how he got there. He happens to cross paths with Harrow asking Marc for the scarab. He ends up blacking out covered in blood this all leads to a Fast and Furious chase and ending up back in bed. Turns out he’s missed a whole week and missed his date. He receives a call from a mysterious voice who ends up calling him Marc. Notices he has a different goldfish, gets a visit from the scary birdman and goes back to work. Harrow followed him all the way from the fields and confronts. And he’s friends with the museum guards. He sends the hounds on him, locks himself in the bathroom, then Marc Spector appears in the mirror to convince Steven to let him save the day. Steven concurs Marc summons the suit and beats the living daylights out of that hound. Moon Knight gets up then the episode ends. Moon Knight started off with a great episode to the series. There was a bit of mystery, introducing the villain and our heroes and I’m curious to see what happens next.

Episode 2 starts off with Steven getting fired from work but before that he pulls up the security feed to see what went down that night the hound cried Moon Knight. The feed made him look crazy though at the last minute he did see himself with a death stare. At first I thought this was Marc but it might end up being a third personality along with the two we saw in episode 1. Steven goes to a weapons locker and talks to Marc again. He explains that he’s an avatar of Khonsu and draws his powers from the moon. They inflict vengeance on evil and protect the innocent. Before he can go further Steven gets a visit from the moon god and gets a ride from Laila, his wife. Goes to his place and shows her the scarab then gets arrested by the police and Laila jumps out the window. He once again crosses paths with Harrow this time to have a tour. We learn that he was the first Moon Knight clearly didn’t work out left and formed a cult. It’s all fun and games til the hounds show up Laila gives Steven the scarab then he jumps out the window summoning the suit. Enter Mr. Knight he fights the hound gaining confidence along the way. Marc takes control becoming Moon Knight. He takes the fight to the rooftops killing the hound. He looks for the scarab but Harrow has it. Now he must get to the temple first before Harrow brings about Armageddon.

Episode 3 takes place in Egypt where Marc interrogates street thugs to spill where Harrow is? Couple of blackouts later he gets nothing. Khonsu calls an emergency meeting with the gods to stop Harrow from doing no good. Harrow pleads with the council and calls out Khonsu for replacing him with a sick man. Meeting adjourned so Marc and friends have to go with plan b: find the next clue. They find a map to the alligator temple Harrow shows up ordering his henchmen to shoot on sight. Moon Knight moops the floor with them and gets his wife to safety. Steven takes the wheel and teams up with Khonsu to change the night sky and find their destination. Khonsu gets turned to stone and Mr. Knight takes a nap. Episode 3 takes the next step in stopping Harrow from unleashing the Alligator god on the world but at a cost.

Throughout these past few episodes the series has set up for what the series is all about. It’s times like these when it’s refreshing to see a brand new hero in the MCU. At face value it builds itself from the ground up so much so it’s standalone while also set in the same world as Spider Man and Doctor Strange. Now things get serious, the stakes are higher than ever. Episode 4 titled The Tomb is the turning point in the journey of Moon Knight as he is stripped of his abilities for Khonsu is imprisoned in stone. With his confidant Laila at his side they reach Amit’s temple just to foil Harrow’s plans but it proves to be too much for Steven to bear. They fight golems sworn to protect the temple with their lives, look out for booby traps and find Alexander the Great resting place. Meanwhile Harrow pulls an Incredibles spilling the beans on Laila. This all comes to a head when Laila and Marc reunite before Harrow pulls a fast one. The last few minutes of this episode had me at the edge of my seat. Marvel has been doing these Disney Plus shows for about a year and if there’s anything I learn from their time producing Daredevil for Netflix is that risks are worth exploring sometimes giving the best results. I’ve been having a ball with Moon Knight as it ends on May 4 Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness will kick things into overdrive.

Moon Knight’s finale is right around the corner and with how many episodes this series has left I’m left to wonder will they stick the landing. Asylum is the penultimate episode setting the stage for the final chapter of the series if it doesn’t get a season 2. It answers a lot of questions brought up in the first 2 episodes providing contexts for Marc Spector and where he came from. I’m sure Harrow freeing Amit unleashed havoc at a small town by the time Doctor Strange is traveling to different universes and we don’t know who or what he’ll cross paths with as the film drops. I can’t reveal much but let’s just say there are times where it hits hard throughout the trip down memory lane for our hero. This episode left me shocked and there’s only one more episode next week and I’m curious how all of this is going to play out.

Gods and Monsters is the moment we’ve all been waiting for. It had action, cinematography, and one question we’ve all been asking: Who’s the third guy? Picks up right after Harrow killed Moon Knight and is now set on releasing Amit, killing us all. First he broke into the god’s courtroom and killed all of them leaving no one to stop him and his master. Little did he know Laila was on the hunt but instead she gets a message from Gloria from Madagascar. She tells Laila that Marc needs Khonsu released so that he can return back to the living. Also, she shouldn’t engage Harrow on her own yet. Laila follows Harrow to the temple freeing Khonsu from prison. Meanwhile Marc is staring at the beautiful fields. It’s just a shame that Steven had to be left behind to die. Regretting his actions from last episode, he goes back to the sands to rescue Steven with a rock in his pocket. Before he turns to stone Marc puts the rock on Steven’s hand freeing them both. And Moon Knight rises again returning back to the living. Khonsu confronts Amit to the point everyone besides Moon Knight can see them. This all leads to a King Kong vs Godzilla fight with Amit and Khonsu while Moon Knight along with Mr. Knight and Laila fight Harrow in an all out showdown. Since Marc and Steven put aside their differences they are able to fight as a unit while Laila becomes an avatar of Gloria from Madagascar. All is going well then Harrow dialoguing Moon Knight on the ground before he bashed his head with the cane blackouts. Moon Knight defeated Harrow and performed a ritual to imprison Amit once again. Khonsu orders Moon Knight to kill Harrow for as long as he lives and Amit will try again. Instead Marc refuses and tells Khonsu to take out the trash himself. Little did he know Harrow’s fate was already sealed from the moment he started a cult. Present day Harrow’s in a round of bingo then gets whisked away by an unknown assailant who played a big part in the villain’s downfall. A limo pops up and he’s greeted by his former master. Moon Knight wanted Khonsu to release him from his predicament if he defeated Amit. Khonsu doubled crossed him then it pans to the driver’s seat revealing a mysterious character teased throughout the show. It’s none other than Oscar Isaac. He puts Harrow in the dirt and rides off to his next project if Moon Knight doesn’t get a season 2.
