The Way of Water

The Way of Water

2022 has come to an end. It was a strange year especially for Disney.

I’m happy to say that Avatar 2 managed to exceed expectations.

James Cameron made plenty of hits in his time. Terminator. Aliens. Point Break. Titanic. Every project he does is a hit.

Name one bad James Cameron film.

He always pushed the scale of what a film can be in perfection. Marvel can use this film as inspiration to return to its greatness. James Gunn has been getting alot of red flags over killing the Justice League. Even before he came on board DC had those principles of what superhero movies can and shouldn’t do. If you didn’t like what they did with the DCEU, blame the old regime. Zack Snyder and the cast deserved better. Henry Cavil deserved better. Ben Affleck. Gal. Jason Momoa. Ray Fisher. Just to name a few.

Which brings us to Da Wae of Water. Right out the gate a lot of time has passed since the first film released all the way back in 2009. I still remember my first time watching it with my family at the local theater in 3D. Blew me AWAY.

That’s when 3D was becoming popular.

Most of the cast returned. Zoe Saldana. Sam Worthington. Stephen Lang. And Sigourney Weaver.

There will be spoilers ahead.

Da Wae of Water is a family movie. Recipe for success. Jake and Neytiri have a big family. Most of them got 5 fingers. One of them is Grace’s daughter Kiri, also played by said actress. She has a deep connection to Pandora. After seeing her control the water she gave me Aang vibes.

This and The Last Airbender share the same name. James just happened to have a script for the original in the 90s. It never crossed my mind until they put water in the title. By the final movie they’ll master all four elements. Fire. Earth. Water. Air.

Somehow Quaritch returned but better than Star Wars. Sky People backed up his memories and uploaded it to an Avatar. He remembers everything but his death. Different body, same Quaritch. Ruthless as ever. Why so blue?

They even brought his crew back. Bald dude would have scored a girlfriend if he kept the hair.

They go through what Sully went through in the first movie. Fish out of water. The Female Sky General is basically Quaritch’s boss. He bonds with one of the bird creatures on the first try. Spider thought he was scott free but still captive at the same time. Big L.

Since Spider knew their whole operation, The Sully’s gotta move to da water. The Metkayina Clan are wary of outsiders, especially the queen. Anyone with 5 fingers each no less. Demon blood. Lo’ak got eyes on the cheif’s daughter. He tends to get himself into trouble. Almost got himself killed. Messed with the chief’s kids. They were making fun of Kiri. Sully is trying to protect his family, especially Lo’ak. He’s a good dad. Told him to make friends with the other kids.

The Water Tribe is pretty interesting. Back then I knew Pandora was a big planet. I just didn’t think there were other clans. Their skins are a greenish teal. Built different. Tails are bigger. Giant hands. And they ride these fish birds. They even breathe underwater. Got jellyfish wings for oxygen. It’s alot.

Lo’ak hangs out with the water kids. Catch some waves. Ditched him midway. Ambushed by a space shark. The Whale saved his life. Became bros. Every scene where he’s hanging out with Payakan eating fish, swimming underwater. It’s enough to make a grown man cry. Payakan led an army of space whales and Navi to fight Sky People. Things just got out of hand. Everyone died. Called him an outcast. And he’s been on his own ever since. The Whale did nothing wrong.

The More I think about it Lo’ak and Payakan are two sides of the same coin.

Can’t say the same for the Sky People. They massacred an entire race of space whales. Children included.

Gutted their brain juice. And Spider got the best seat in the house.

Spider is the son of Quaritch. He may have been your father but he wasn’t your daddy. He’s like Avatar’s Tarzan.

Water Tribe waged war on Quaritch. Jake tries to calm everyone down including Neytiri. Lo’ak jumps to da water. He gotta save his whale brother from Quaritch. Do you know Da Way? Oh Kira and the others followed him including Tuk.

All hell broke loose. Everyone convenged on Quaritch. Water Tribe. Sully’s. The Queen’s pregnancy don’t stop her for avengening her whale sister. Even Paykan joins the fight. He got revenge on that marine who killed his sister or cousin. Grabs the hook and straight up sunk the ship. Catch you on the flip side!

Quaritch riding his bird with a gun.

Back to Spider, Neytiri  doesn’t like him at all. During the final battle they lost the older brother. She made an ultimatum. A son for a son. Held him with a knife. She almost killed him. If Quaritch didn’t drop it she’d finish the job.

For Da Water. Without question.

Spider ended up saving the fool after Jake gave him a whopping. Close it out with old school. Think Spider Think. He’s a killer. Nothing gonna stop him from killing everyone. He’ll just come back again and again til Neytiri kills him again. She said it herself. I don’t care how many times I have to kill you.

Lo’ak and Kira end up saving the day. Used their connection to the water saving their lives. Turns into a lightshow. Guiding them out the ship. Paykan gets them to safety. Neytiri got the jellyfish wings. Spider ended up ditching Quaritch. I’m sure that won’t bite them later. Oh wait. And Jake gives everyone a family group hug. Come here.

They have found DA WAE

It’s unfortunate the oldest had to go out on a limb. He’s basically Jake and Neytiri rolled into one. Best of both worlds. They held a funeral for him. Neytiri sang the song from earlier. Neteyam is with Eywa now.

It’s like the ancestral plane in Black Panther but for Avatar. Death is not the end. Like Jake and Neytiri can still reach him by connecting to the Spirit Tree. Kira even talked to her mother in I guess the Avatar State but got cut off. If she links up again she’ll die.

Knowing Cameron, he’ll probably make Kira more powerful in the sequels. Next element is Fire. The Ash People. Basically firebenders. Like one of the kids gonna set their mouths on fire and end up burning the house down. Call 911! The Roofs on FIRE!

Maybe Water girl will join their road trip furthering her and To’ak romance. Not that something bad gonna happen to her family. Just a thought.

Runtime aside, I really liked Avatar 2. Great experience. I like both films. They each have their own flair and it gives me an idea of what to expect in the sequels. Kudos to James Cameron and the crew involved. Cast included. Knocked it out of the park.

Can’t wait for the sequel.

This is Ruben Comics. Signing Off!!!
