Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Sonic The Hedgehog is an icon everyone looked up to growing up including me. He’s had ups and downs over the years but one thing that keeps him running is he’s always on an adventure along with his signature attitude. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is everything I want from a Sonic movie. It might be the Best Video Game Movie Ever. Jeff Fowler He worked on cinematics for Shadow The Hedgehog.  It’s basically the Sonic Heroes movie.

As far as I can remember Sonic has always been a hero traveling around the globe in search of adventure. Whenever Eggman and other villains do something bad he always plants his feet and never gives in. From Sonic X to The Black Knight Jason Griffith set the bar for what the blue blur stands on. He’s no longer the current voice of the games but he’ll always be Sonic in my heart. I commend the first movie for laying the groundwork for the eventual rivalry between our Sonic and Eggman. Last one was more like Donut Lord vs Eggman. The movie picks up with Sonic patrolling around the world stopping bad guys in fast speed fashion. Doing plenty of damage. Tom and Maddie do their best to instill wisdom to the blue hedgehog about looking after others and making friends along the way.

In many ways it builds off the first movie while also expanding on lore from the games. From Chaos Emeralds, GUN to the Death Egg Robot they have it all. A long time ago the Echidnas gather all 7 emeralds forging it into a weapon of mass destruction: The Master Emerald. They laid waste to the cosmos until Longclaw’s Owl tribe took it, hiding it on Earth so that it would never be used for evil again until today. Different but still accurate.

When Sega wanted to go in a different direction after Sonic and The Black Knight they fired everyone and hired new writers along with new voices for all the characters didn’t go so well. I didn’t know what to expect when they announced Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles. He suits the role perfectly along with Tails. Like a bug on a windshield, he smashes everything in his path fighting Sonic and finding the Master Emerald. He actually started out as a villian in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It’s like they took elements from Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic Heroes rolling all them together in one package. His design is like a cross between Boom Knuckles and Modern Knuckles. Best of both worlds. When he was little his dad made him stay behind while the Echidna tribe was hunting Sonic for he too was little. He just wants to restore his tribe’s twisted honor. It’s only when Sonic shows the hot headed Echidna of Eggman’s treachery that they become friends and hop on the Tornado reaching their final destination. They declared themselves the Sonic Heroes to try and put a stop to the doctor’s evil plans.

This scene was amazing. They all fight like the Sonic Heroes games. Tails whips out his gadgets. Knuckles made Egghead eat his own words. Dis is how I roll. And when I thought it couldn’t get any better Sonic turned into Super Sonic. Moops the floor with Death Egg. When the dust settled he lets go of the Chaos Emeralds and it ends with Sonic and friends playing in the baseball field.

Jim Carrey has shown time and time again that he has what it takes to commit to his roles. The Mask, Riddler, The Grinch, and Ace Ventura. Dr. Eggman is the villain that loves to have an audience and acts silly but when things get serious you realize just how much of a threat he turns out to be. He went from Dr. Robotnik from the first movie to Dr Eggman to EGGGOD. The Multiverse’s on his to-do list. It’s funny because Sonic Prime is gonna travel across the multiverse. Everyone’s cashing in on the multiverse train. I don’t know if he’ll return a third time one things for sure I enjoyed every second of his performance. And there’s no actor I would rather have brought Eggman to life than Jim Carrey.

There’s plenty of easter eggs and homages such as the snow mountain from Sonic Adventure to Sonic’s kryptonite being water like the tv show Sonic X and earlier Sonic games. Overall, I love this film and it’s a love letter for Sonic fans new and old around the world. During the post credits scene GUN secured the primitor thinking they’ve seen the last of the manaicial doctor with 5 phds. Yeah Eggman survived worse in the games. When they were wiping Eggman from their internet history one of the agents discovered a secret military project dating back 50 years. Cuts to an underground lab with Shadow suspended in a pod just like Sonic Heroes. Sonic gonna have to grow up Fast. This guy is no joke. There’s going the Sonic Adventure 2 route. Shadow’s one of the darkest characters from the Sonic mythos. After 06 Sega put weird mandates on him. From what I read in the IDW comics he’s basically a Vegeta clone. A shell of his former self. The movies don’t have that luxury. They did everyone else right. Maybe they’ll give Shadow the justice he deserves. I give it a S rank or an 11. It exceeded all my expectations and I can’t wait to see what happens next for Sonic and who else might show up in the Sonic Universe.
